What it's like
The boardwalk curves around the enclosure, so you can walk out over the water, jump in and swim under it to the shark net. The water is calm, clear harbour water, and the beach beside it is one of Sydney's favourite family beaches.
Mosman Council opened public baths here in the late 1890s; they were leased to Robert Shearer and known for years as Shearer's Baths. The Bathers Pavilion beside them was built in 1928-29 and is on the NSW State Heritage Register.
When to go
Mornings are calm and quiet; summer weekends are very busy, with parking hard to find.
Getting there and facilities
The baths are on The Esplanade, Balmoral. There are cafes and restaurants along the Esplanade, including in the Bathers Pavilion. Buses run to Balmoral from Mosman and the city.
Good to know
There are no surf conditions, but there are no lifeguards at the baths. Avoid swimming for a few days after heavy rain.
