Merewether Ocean Baths in Newcastle are often described as the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere: a huge main pool with a lap section and a separate learners pool, free and open around the clock except on Thursdays.

What it's like
The baths sit at the southern end of Merewether Beach, below the headland. The main pool is vast, roughly 100 m by 50 m by most accounts, with a lane section for lap swimmers and plenty of open water for everyone else. A smaller, shallower learners pool sits alongside for children. Waves break over the outer wall in a swell, and the spray and sunrise light make it one of Newcastle's best-loved spots.
A smaller set of baths was built on the rock shelf here in the 1920s. The present baths opened in 1935, and they have been a centre of Newcastle swimming ever since.
When to go
The baths are open every day and night except Thursdays, when they close all day for cleaning. Early morning is the classic time for laps and sunrise. In summer a lifeguard is on duty from 9am to 5.30pm, from late September to late April.
Getting there and facilities
The baths are at the end of Henderson Parade, Merewether. Change rooms open daily from 5.30am, and there are toilets and showers. There is free timed parking near the baths and along the beachfront, but it fills fast on warm weekends, so arrive early. Council has been replacing the shade shelters, due to finish in early December 2026.
Good to know
Council tests the water quality at the baths itself. Outside summer lifeguard hours, swim at your own risk.
