What it's like
The Canoe Pool is a broad, shallow sea pool next to the main Newcastle Ocean Baths, made for children to splash and paddle safely while the open sea breaks beyond the wall. It shares the rock platform with the ocean baths, which once also held the tiny Cowrie Hole bathing pool.
When to go
Calm days in summer are ideal for small children. The neighbouring ocean baths close all day on Wednesdays for cleaning; check council notices for the Canoe Pool too.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is on Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle East, next to the ocean baths. The baths' change rooms open daily from 5.30am, and there is free and paid parking nearby. Newcastle Beach light rail stop is a short walk away.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pool. Children should be supervised at all times.
