What it's like
The pool sits on the rocks at the southern end of Whale Beach, between Palm Beach and Avalon. At 25 m it is a good size for a few laps or a relaxed swim, and the beach around it is quieter than its better-known neighbours. Waves wash into the pool in a swell.
The name is said to come either from a whale that once washed up here or from the shape of the headland; no one is quite sure which.
When to go
Calm mornings are best. Council publishes a dated cleaning roster, and the pool is out of use for about three hours before each listed cleaning time and up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas.
Getting there and facilities
Access is from The Strand, with pay-and-display parking. There are change rooms and toilets, and barbecues and a playground close by.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pool itself.
