What it's like
A creek tumbles over a small waterfall into a sheltered lagoon, cut off from the open sea by a sand bar. The lagoon water is calm, good for young children, swimming and lilos, with the beach a short walk away.
It is also one of the most dangerous places in the park for jumpers. Shifting sand and erosion have created hidden hazards under the water, and several people have died after jumping from the rocks or ledges into the lagoon.
When to go
Weekday mornings outside school holidays; the car park fills early on summer weekends. Check National Parks alerts before you go.
Getting there and facilities
Drive into the Royal National Park (vehicle entry fee) to the Wattamolla picnic area, which has toilets and picnic areas. Check current opening hours with National Parks, as access can be limited.
Good to know
Do not jump from the rocks or the falls. Lifeguards patrol the beach in summer; swim where they can see you. Mobile reception is patchy.
